Reducing and eliminating dangerous and underage use of alcohol is a crucial part of the PLCB's mission. We work closely with other agencies, organizations and groups towards this goal.
Over the past 17 years, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has taken a leadership role in the elimination and reduction of underage drinking and other forms of alcohol abuse. The Bureau of Alcohol Education works on many levels with schools, community groups, licensees and others to combat underage and high-risk drinking.
Over the past several years, the Board has placed a special emphasis on preventing dangerous drinking among college students. We provide technical assistance, training and funding to colleges and universities throughout the Commonwealth, to help them coordinate efforts in their campus communities. Some of the accomplishments include the following:
-
a statewide partnership with private, state system and state related colleges and universities to address these problems on a statewide level
-
a grant program, which has distributed more than $4 million to more than 220 schools and communities throughout the Commonwealth
-
the formation of regional coalitions that meet regularly to coordinate resources and information
-
training and technical assistance for schools and communities to help establish healthy social norms, consistent enforcement and the development of alcohol-free activities on campus
Of course, alcohol problems are not limited to college students, and we provide information, resources and programs regarding many other issues, including:
Eliminating alcohol abuse is a shared responsibility, and it requires the involvement of many stakeholders: parents, community groups, education, law enforcement, liquor licensees, the beverage alcohol industry and government.
